MESSAGE

松田 一郎

真なる探究心から 未来の価値づくりを。

In July 2022, former President Kuga formulated the "President's Vision," outlining what he wanted Muroran Institute of Technology to be, and has been working on flexible, evidence-based reforms to ensure a thriving future for students graduating from the Faculty of Science and Engineering and to realize the Hokkaido MONO-Zukuri Vision 2060.

I became the 15th president of Muroran Institute of Technology in April 2024. Two years have passed since the start of our fourth mid-term goals and plan in April 2022, and during that time the environment surrounding the university has continued to change at an accelerating rate.

In order to respond to these accelerating changes, we have formulated the "Matsuda Vision," which amends the three missions of education, research, and co-creation that were established in the "President's Vision."

-- Creating value for the future with a true spirit of inquiry. --

The slogan "True Spirit of Inquiry" has a deep meaning.

Muroran Institute of Technology reorganized from the Faculty of Engineering to the Faculty of Science and Engineering in April 2019, moving to a new stage.

We believe that the "core 'spirit of inquiry' that is at the core of who we are" - not only our faculty and staff, but also our students, the companies with which we conduct collaborative research, local governments and other various people - is a powerful, invisible force, and that through science and engineering that seeks the truth, it will become the driving force that will change the technology of the future.

We must have a strong determination to contribute to "creating value for the future" five to ten years from now through "true inquiring mind," which is an absolute prerequisite for realizing the "Matsuda Vision."

Muroran Institute of Technology will increase its value as a national technical university located in Muroran, Hokkaido, and play an important role in the stable and sustainable development of Hokkaido, Japan, and the world. It will sincerely carry out its mission of education, research, and co-creation, and will drive transformation for the next generation with the motto, "Creating value for the future from a true spirit of inquiry."

EDUCATION 教育

We will produce strong science and engineering talent, especially talent with the expertise to combine expertise with information.

The coming generation of scientists and engineers will require people with general knowledge of science and engineering fields that go beyond their own field of expertise, as well as knowledge of mathematics, data science, and AI. In addition to our traditional science and engineering curriculum, we will systematically provide information education certified by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology as a mathematics, AI, and data science program, and provide education that combines expertise and information in all graduate school majors, thereby producing the "expertise x information" talent that society demands.

We will increase the rate of students moving on to master's programs at graduate school to 50%.

In April 2024, we established a new course in Co-Creation Informatics in the Master's Program at the Graduate School. In this course, we select outstanding students from a wide range of fields of expertise, and in addition to their original fields of expertise, we provide specialized information science subjects and PBL subjects in collaboration with companies and other universities, and develop highly skilled information specialists who can contribute to solving social issues by using a wide range of fields of expertise and information science as two wheels. In addition, we introduced the "Bachelor's and Master's Integrated Education Program" in 2019, and have striven to cultivate a research mindset from an early stage in the undergraduate program. We will continue to actively work to convey the appeal of graduate school, especially to cultivate a research mindset, and aim to achieve a 50% rate of advancement to the Master's Program at the Graduate School.

We foster and support excellent doctoral students.

Muroran Institute of Technology has been selected for the Next Generation Researchers Challenging Research Program from 2021. This program selects outstanding students in the doctoral program and provides them with living expenses and research funds during their studies, as well as financial support to support the research and self-improvement of outstanding students and support for the formation of diverse career paths.

RESEARCH 研究

We will let our strengths and solid research capabilities shine.

Muroran Institute of Technology's strengths are represented in the fields of aerospace aircraft, rare earth materials, computer science, and agricultural-industrial collaboration. Each of these fields has achieved success in obtaining external funding, international collaborative research, world-class research achievements, and regional co-creation research achievements. We will continue to nurture research that will further strengthen Muroran Institute of Technology's research strengths in Hokkaido.

We will create a world-class education and research community.

The Computer Science Center was launched in 2023. Each of our university's research centers, including this organization, will be made up of researchers with a proven track record to ensure solid research capabilities, and we will accept and mentor excellent doctoral students here, as well as invite internationally renowned researchers and improve communication, forming a world-class education and research community.

Support young researchers.

Muroran Institute of Technology has introduced support systems for young researchers, such as overseas dispatch support, a startup expenses system for new faculty, English paper proofreading support, and paper submission support. We will continue to provide systems to support young researchers in the future.

CO-CREATION 共創

Contribute to Hokkaido's carbon neutrality.

Starting in fiscal year 2021, we have been participating in the "Zero Carbon Iburi" and "Coalition of Universities Contributing to Achieving Carbon Neutrality." By taking advantage of the characteristics of researchers at Muroran Institute of Technology, we will carry out initiatives aimed at becoming "carbon positive" and contribute to carbon neutrality from Hokkaido.

We will contribute to the creation of MONO and value in Hokkaido.

In order to realize the "Hokkaido MONO-Zukuri Vision 2060," the MONO-Zukuri Future Co-Creation Organization was established in April 2023. In co-creation with society, we will develop emerging groups that have the potential to become the core of future society, build co-creation spaces, co-create between organizations, and build new collaboration platforms, leading the creation of ecosystems and contributing to making Hokkaido a "world-class value creation space."

情報化されたMONOづくり

We will actively disseminate information.

Muroran Institute of Technology will not only plan and execute education, research, and co-creation, but will also proactively disseminate information about the results of these activities both inside and outside the university, using communication methods that respond to a variety of stakeholders, such as newsletters, social media, and face-to-face dialogue.
