Towards a value creation space
The coming generation of scientists and engineers will require people with general knowledge of science and engineering fields that go beyond their own field of expertise, as well as knowledge of mathematics, data science, and AI. In addition to our traditional science and engineering curriculum, we will systematically provide information education certified by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology as a mathematics, AI, and data science program, and provide education that combines expertise and information in all graduate school majors, thereby producing the "expertise x information" talent that society demands.
In April 2024, we established a new course in Co-Creation Informatics in the Master's Program at the Graduate School. In this course, we select outstanding students from a wide range of fields of expertise, and in addition to their original fields of expertise, we provide specialized information science subjects and PBL subjects in collaboration with companies and other universities, and develop highly skilled information specialists who can contribute to solving social issues by using a wide range of fields of expertise and information science as two wheels. In addition, we introduced the "Bachelor's and Master's Integrated Education Program" in 2019, and have striven to cultivate a research mindset from an early stage in the undergraduate program. We will continue to actively work to convey the appeal of graduate school, especially to cultivate a research mindset, and aim to achieve a 50% rate of advancement to the Master's Program at the Graduate School.
Muroran Institute of Technology has been selected for the Next Generation Researchers Challenging Research Program from 2021. This program selects outstanding students in the doctoral program and provides them with living expenses and research funds during their studies, as well as financial support to support the research and self-improvement of outstanding students and support for the formation of diverse career paths.
Muroran Institute of Technology's strengths are represented in the fields of aerospace aircraft, rare earth materials, computer science, and agricultural-industrial collaboration. Each of these fields has achieved success in obtaining external funding, international collaborative research, world-class research achievements, and regional co-creation research achievements. We will continue to nurture research that will further strengthen Muroran Institute of Technology's research strengths in Hokkaido.
The Computer Science Center was launched in 2023. Each of our university's research centers, including this organization, will be made up of researchers with a proven track record to ensure solid research capabilities, and we will accept and mentor excellent doctoral students here, as well as invite internationally renowned researchers and improve communication, forming a world-class education and research community.
Muroran Institute of Technology has introduced support systems for young researchers, such as overseas dispatch support, a startup expenses system for new faculty, English paper proofreading support, and paper submission support. We will continue to provide systems to support young researchers in the future.
Starting in fiscal year 2021, we have been participating in the "Zero Carbon Iburi" and "Coalition of Universities Contributing to Achieving Carbon Neutrality." By taking advantage of the characteristics of researchers at Muroran Institute of Technology, we will carry out initiatives aimed at becoming "carbon positive" and contribute to carbon neutrality from Hokkaido.
In order to realize the "Hokkaido MONO-Zukuri Vision 2060," the MONO-Zukuri Future Co-Creation Organization was established in April 2023. In co-creation with society, we will develop emerging groups that have the potential to become the core of future society, build co-creation spaces, co-create between organizations, and build new collaboration platforms, leading the creation of ecosystems and contributing to making Hokkaido a "world-class value creation space."
Muroran Institute of Technology will not only plan and execute education, research, and co-creation, but will also proactively disseminate information about the results of these activities both inside and outside the university, using communication methods that respond to a variety of stakeholders, such as newsletters, social media, and face-to-face dialogue.
