Environmental Engineering

We will focus on the environment and cover a wide range of engineering fields surrounding it, and tackle a wide range of topics to create a sustainable society in harmony with the environment.

Educational objectives of the major

In order to build a sustainable society in harmony with the environment, taking into account changes in the natural and social environment, we train creative talent with a wide range of knowledge who are able to carry out the formulation of public policies and measures related to the environment and disaster prevention. We also conduct research and development on the creation of useful substances that make advanced use of chemical reactions and biological functions, the construction of systems that apply these substances and related phenomena, and the establishment of technologies to improve living environments. We also conduct research and development on the construction, maintenance, and conservation of social infrastructure, including buildings and underground spaces, as well as disaster prevention. We also conduct research and development on the planning, design, and construction of cities and residential spaces where people can live comfortably and safely.

Department Overview

The Department of Environmental Engineering is centered on the environment and consists of related fields, and deals with a wide range of content for building a sustainable society. While sharing and fusing the "environment" from the perspectives of the "chemistry and biology" and "construction" fields, we have set up a program in which students can learn in depth about the content of their own specialized course field in chemistry and biology, environmental architecture, or civil engineering, using information technology. In other words, as a background for the entire department, students first learn about the overall awareness of environmental issues and the current situation related to each field in common major subjects, and then, using the approach to environmental issues in each field as an entry point, they learn specialized knowledge and research methods in chemistry and biology, architecture, or civil engineering through special subjects in each course. This education program cultivates highly specialized professionals who have the ability to fundamentally solve various environmental problems and are rich in creativity to solve the problems they set for themselves.

Course Overview

Chemical and Biological Engineering Course

We train students who have a basic knowledge of chemistry, which deals with the substances that shape the living and natural environments of humans and other living organisms, and biology, which understands the workings of life, and who can utilize these knowledge with the aid of information technology from an engineering perspective that meets the needs of the times and with an awareness of social responsibility, thereby contributing to the creation of a sustainable society.

Therefore, the course curriculum involves systematically acquiring knowledge of chemistry and biology. By deepening understanding of basic knowledge through core subjects such as Physical Chemistry, Environmental Catalytic Chemistry, Reaction Organic Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Life Science, Environmental Biotechnology, and Chemical Process Production, as well as by taking applied and information-related subjects, students will develop problem-solving skills in a wide range of environmental fields, with a focus on chemistry and biology.

Architecture Course

In order to build a sustainable society in response to the declining birthrate and aging population, we train talented people who can respond to the demands of the times as engineers in the field of architecture with advanced specialized knowledge related to the planning and design of architecture and urban spaces that are friendly to both people and the environment, as well as structural design to realize safe buildings that are comfortable, energy-efficient, and have a long life, even in snowy and cold regions, building equipment and construction, and a high level of ethics.

Therefore, the course curriculum involves systematically acquiring knowledge from the basics about architectural and urban space planning and design, structural design for safe buildings, building facilities and construction, etc. Students will deepen their understanding of the basics by selecting two fields from the four fields of materials, structure, design, and environment in the core subject group, while also taking applied subjects in the area subject group, thereby cultivating problem-solving abilities in the field of environmental architecture.

Civil Engineering Course

We train talented people who can respond to the demands of the times as civil engineers with high levels of specialized knowledge and the information processing technology to utilize such knowledge, as well as the design of social infrastructure facilities that contribute to the creation of an environment in which people can enjoy spiritual richness, particularly in national, regional and urban spaces, as well as urban planning and disaster prevention systems that ensure safe, secure and comfortable lives. They also have the necessary ethics and a strong sense of ethics.

Therefore, the course curriculum will allow students to systematically acquire knowledge of civil engineering from the basics. Students will deepen their understanding of basic knowledge by taking two or more subjects related to structural mechanics, hydraulics, soil mechanics, and civil engineering planning, which belong to the core subjects group. In addition, students will develop problem-solving abilities in the fields of the environment and disaster prevention by taking course information subjects and applied subjects in the field subjects group to acquire information processing techniques that will enhance specialized knowledge and the ability to utilize it.
